Janice Fine holds a PhD in Political Science from MIT, is Professor of Labor Studies and Employment Relations at the School of Management and Labor Relations at Rutgers University and Director of the Workplace Justice Lab@RU. Fine teaches and writes about forms of collective action among low-wage workers in the U.S including innovative union and community organizing strategies, historical and contemporary debates within labor movements regarding immigration policy, and labor standards enforcement. The Workplace Justice Lab works across the country with federal, state and local labor agencies to research labor violations in their jurisdictions and facilitate the development, implementation and dissemination of innovative labor standards enforcement strategies and strong partnerships between agencies, worker justice organizations and legal non-profits. The other arm of the Lab helps worker justice organizations to dramatically scale up their membership and leadership bases through training and intensive coaching on distributed organizing practices. Their partnerships with unions, worker centers and community organizing groups have helped them create the necessary systems and practices to move from reliance on a few overworked leaders to powerful bases of hundreds of workers and community members leading volunteer teams.
