Mary Alice McCarthy leads the Center on Education and Labor at New America, a research, policy development, and strategic communications program dedicated to expanding access to economic security for all Americans. The Center supports a wide range of projects focused on strengthening pathways into good, family-sustaining jobs through strategies like apprenticeships, labor-management partnerships, community college career training programs, and economic and workforce development initiatives. Dr. McCarthy’s writing has been featured in a diverse set of media outlets including the Washington Monthly, The Atlantic, Forbes, and the Journal on Community College Research and Practice. Prior to joining New America, Dr. McCarthy worked at both the U.S. Departments of Education and Labor. She has a PhD in political science from the University of North Carolina.
